History

Artworks Gallery Members Celebrate 30 years of Artworks Gallery by talking about making art: When and Why?

Our mission means everything to us, and we have the history to prove it.

Artworks Gallery was founded in 1984 to give Winston-Salem area artists a place to show and sell their work. The goal was to give artists the freedom to create in an open and supportive environment. The first show took place at Salem College in April of 1984. The gallery’s first permanent location was 217 W. Sixth St. now home to Steele Group Architects. When it opened it was one of the only galleries or businesses in the Trade Street area that has since grown into the city’s Arts District.
