Painting Collage Pottery

Artist Statement

My paintings and multimedia collages range from representational to semi-abstract with a focus on figurative and architectural subject matter. Things that inspire me are body language, movement and shapes. Based on the fact that I was a plein air painter for many years, strong dark and light patterns are something I always notice and use in my work. I like to find what is notable about a subject and strengthen it and then express it through the use of color, values, composition and simplification. In the past three years, I have begun to work with clay again. My love is hand building versus using a potter’s wheel because I enjoy the sculptural aspect, the carving into the clay to create textures and abstract images and building forms. I am working with wall pieces as well as vessels.

Cheryl Powell studied Fashion Design at Pratt Institute, earned a BFA in Graphic Design from Carnegie Mellon University, and a MA in Illustration from Syracuse University.

When moving to Winston-Salem, NC, in 1978, she began painting seriously until her graphic design career left little time for that. Transitioning to freelance design work in 1999 allowed her to return to fine art, focusing on plein air painting and figure drawing.

Since retiring in 2015, Cheryl has dedicated herself to studio work, exploring figurative and architectural themes and developing a strong interest in collage. Her studio is located in Winston-Salem’s Arts District.
