Artist Statement
All of my work originates in my gut. I start with a concept, then a title. I work intuitively with unstructured brushstrokes, meaning I just have at it. A painting moves according to what I feel it needs, and is finished when I am satisfied with it. At one time I used recognizable imagery, but that has been gone for a long time. I can't, however, say that something is not in a painting just because I didn't put it there. Lately a lot of rectangles have been creeping in among the brushstrokes. Color is usually one of the ideas I start with. Most of my work is very small, but there have been some departures from that. For four years I did nothing but drawings. I work in acrylic on canvas, paper or poplar panel, or in graphite on paper.
