About
Mission Statement
Artworks Gallery LLC is a co-operative artist-run gallery with the mission to provide a professional public space for artist members to exhibit and sell their work.
Artist Membership
The membership pays dues $60/month and shares control of the cooperative on the basis of one member, one vote principle. All the needs of the Gallery are met by most members having a designated job as well as Gallery sitting, and members are expected to do additional volunteering for special projects or needs in keeping with the cooperative spirit of Artworks. We intend to encourage artist members to grow and experiment in their art making and ex-hibiting. Artist applicants are juried by the members who look for professionalism and potential for artistic growth in any applicant.
History
Artworks Gallery, Inc., began in 1984. Twenty Winston-Salem artists
decided to form a co-operative gallery in order to have the freedom of
expression that having their own gallery would afford them. After an initial
exhibition at Salem College, (where three members were art faculty), the
group rented a storefront on Sixth Street in Winston-Salem. Early exhibits
introduced our city to a group of playful, serious, daring artists who were also
capable of running their own show. We celebrated our 10th Anniversary with
a group exhibit and the production of a 10th Anniversary softbound book
which included a work of art on paper by each member artist. We sold all
fifty in the first week they were offered.
In 1990 the Gallery moved to its present home, a building that houses
several studio galleries on the corner of Sixth and Trade Streets. Artworks
Gallery, Inc. mounts 12 shows a year, mostly two-person shows, with
occasional solo and group shows. Our members and volunteers keep the
Gallery open five days a week, organize our public relations and hang the exhibitions. Most openings coincide with an Arts District Gallery Hop, a community evening enjoyed by hundreds.
Artworks has also been a venue for special events in addition to our shows.
We have hosted poetry readings, storytellers, performance artists. Local art institutions such as Reynolda House, Salem Academy and College, Winston-Salem State University, High Point University, and Wake Forest University frequently bring groups to Artworks as part of their learning experience.
New Artist Membership
New members are juried into Artworks by the existing membership. Artist may apply with 8–10 digital images that represent their artistic vision and that demonstrate a cohesive body of work. In addition, the artist should include their artistic statement, their artist resume, and a $25.00 non-refund-able application fee.
The artist applicant will be asked to bring in their artwork at a later date for the jurying process. Once accepted, the additional fee for membership in the Gallery is $75.00
