Betti Pettinati-Longinotti

Passage imageDecember 31, 2013 - February 1, 2014
Meet the artist at the Gallery Hop,
Friday, January 3, 7 - 10 pm

Artworks Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Betti Pettinati-Longinotti “Passage”, an installation of mixed media paintings, plus glass works- mosaic, fused glass and stained glass.

Ms. Longinotti's states her "installation is of abstract expressionist intuitive painting and glass assemblage contemplatively interfaces with the life cycle through a visual metaphor of daily ritual." She continues: "This installation collectively interfaces the Intervals of our day, week, year, over a course a decade. Each painting sequence of time flows contiguously to the next, with pause, contemplation and celebration. These intuitive paintings may be perceived as visual prayer and grow out of an inspiration by the abstract conceptual paintings of Pousette-Dart. At the outset of my work I desired to reflect on my own prayer tradition, the rhythm and pattern of the rosary and the Joyful mysteries. As the work emerged, it revealed itself more as a reflection on time and an intercession on life, with all its joy and sorrow, color and texture.

‘Up-cycling’ is a new and trendy word, and befits the intent through my work, and my spirituality as a Franciscan. In the mixed media oil paintings, this is the first time I have begun to work with glass as a painting material to add texture to the painting surface. I learned earlier this summer that the abstract expressionist, Jackson Pollock, used pulverized glass in his paintings (most likely from the waste from his wife Lee Krasner’s glass mosaic projects). I like the idea of up-cycling materials that are waste from one medium as an addition to another. For years as a glass artist I have been cutting glass for projects and have much scrap glass material. My hope is to ‘up’ or recycle all of this scrap into mosaic pieces, and reduce the amount of glass waste."
